Overview

This is the first really new textbook since the 1980’s. What is new is not that it covers materia medica, but that it explains materia medica in the context of internal medicine. As you read each monograph the chapter introductions and sections explaining the normal function, pathomechanisms, clinical concepts and pathologies related to the medicinal category will have prepared you to achieve maximum understanding and memorability. The accompanying CD-ROM will reinforce learning through self-test questions designed to make your study efficient by indicating what materials require further study. The CD-ROM also contains a database application containing the core data for each medicinal studied, an image of it as a high-grade decoction piece, and clinical notes. The application has a text-editable notes facility that can be use to store and display, your own notes, notes shared with others, or curriculum provided by instructors who adopt the text.

Concise Chinese Materia Medica represents a breakthrough in the Western world of Chinese medical literature. Its focus on core clinical information makes it both a practical clinical reference as well as a reliable resource for students facing licensing examinations. Designed with the input of students, educators, and expert practitioners, it identifies and clarifies challenging aspects of medicinal therapy in an effort to improve knowledge acquisition and maximize treatment efficacy. By presenting a wealth of authentic information in a concise and focused manner, this text stands alone as an affordable source of all the key information needed in both the classroom and the clinic.

Designed as a student text with an emphasis on exam preparation and fundamental concept acquisition, it is a unique source of information that in many ways surpasses the Chinese source texts that inspired it. Utilizing a modern, didactic teaching approach that emphasizes clear, step-by-step explanations of theory and application, the Concise Chinese Materia Medica sheds light on the subtle nuances of medicinal actions and traditional disease classifications that can make or break classroom and clinical success. Additionally, by surveying the range of core information found in authoritative Chinese texts, it identifies trends and presents a reliable consensus of information that cannot be matched by any single Chinese source.

This is a particularly valuable materia medica because it delineates the indications for each of the plant, animal or mineral substances in much greater detail than is typical. The reason for this is that the monographs on each medicinal track the indications in the Chinese sources. Because there are clinically more detailed than books designed to to prepare students to pass license exams, it can carry practitioners further in their practice
